Commentary Intro
THE FAMILY OF JACOB: JACOB’S TIME IN EGYPT (Gen.46:1–Gen.47:27)
Jacob would spend seventeen years in Egypt before his death (47:28). Genesis 46:1–47:27 concentrates on his arrival in Egypt, while Genesis 47:28–49:33 relates events during the final year of his life. Little is said about Jacob’s family during the intervening years. However, the effect of the third to seventh years of the famine on the people of Egypt is discussed (Gen.47:13–26).
Jacob’s family journeyed to Egypt with God’s blessing (Gen.46:3–4) and with Pharaoh’s approval (Gen.47:1–6). This is quite the opposite of Abraham’s earlier sojourn in Egypt. While Jacob and his sons acquired land in Egypt (Gen.47:11, 27), the native Egyptians would be losing their land to Pharaoh (47:20–26).
This portion of Genesis also gives a complete list of Jacob’s descendants who came to Egypt (Gen.46:8–27). This migration marks the beginning of the great nation promised to Abraham, a nation that would develop during the long sojourn in Egypt.
